UC Berkeley’s Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) wanted a logo that somehow embodied what they do. And just what is it that they do? As it was explained to me, “[We build] bridges with industry to create research alliances. We negotiate contracts but want to establish and maintain multifaceted relationships with companies for the mutual benefit of UC Berkeley and biotechnology and high-tech companies, all for the public good.” I devised a curved, compound Penrose triangle to denote the key concept of “bridging” between research entities. The mark can be used by itself, or with the logotype, which is set in Avenir 85 Heavy and 65 Medium.
