The client manufactured and marketed haptic robot arm assistance platforms, as well as unique, minimally invasive knee replacement implants. MAKO is an acronym for “Minimal Access Knee Orthopedics.” And, since “mako” is a type of shark, the client suggested they’d like to see a shark fin. It’s more dorsal fin than joint in the final version, but I endeavored to incorporate an abstract, bent knee in the design.

The logo was in continuous use until December of 2013, when MAKO was acquired by Stryker for $1.65B.
